What is Abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a powerful surgery that removes loose abdominal tissue and realigns the rectus abdominus “six-pack” muscles. This procedure is both functional and cosmetic.
Many men and women undergo fluctuations in weight, either age-related or from planned weight loss. With any substantial weight loss, patients are frequently left with widened abdominal girth, and excessively loose abdominal skin, both above and below the belly button.
After pregnancy, many women develop a condition, called diastasis recti, where the abdominal muscles become permanently separated, causing core weakness and a protuberant abdomen. Once developed, it cannot be corrected with diet or exercise. Dr. Parcells’ approach to treating these issues focuses on restoring abdominal core strength by surgically re-tightening the rectus abdominis muscles and removing excess skin and fat to create or restore the natural waistline. When both procedures are done simultaneously, the result can be life-changing.

Tummy Tuck FAQs
Diastasis recti occur when the rectus abdominis muscles, also known as the “six-pack” muscles of the abdominal wall, become separated. This often occurs after extreme weight gain or loss, such as with pregnancy. However, the connection between the two muscles (the linea alba) remains intact, though widened. There is no hole or opening in the lining of the abdominal wall.
A hernia occurs where a hole or opening does develop in the fascia. As a result, part of the intestine may protrude through this opening, risking damage to the intestine and/or infection. This is closely evaluated prior to surgery. If discovered, this is usually easily repaired at the time of abdominoplasty by a general surgeon and is covered by insurance.
